ACCIDENTS ON RUTTED PAVEMENTS

A study of the effects of pavement ruts on traffic accidents was carried out. The basis of the study consisted of 1406 fatal accidents that occurred in Finland during 1975-1981 and were investigated by road accident investigation teams. Of these accidents 128 occurred on rutted (rut depth more than 5 mm) asphalt pavements and in 47 accidents ruts possibly were a contributing factor to the accident. Wheel ruts on asphalt roads were estimated to contribute to about 300-400 traffic accidents - of which 90-120 are injury accidents and 5-10 fatal in Finland every year. The total number of accidents per annum in Finland is about 120000, the number of injury accidents about 14000 and fatal accidents about 500. The number of police reported accidents is about 30000 per annum. (TRRL)
