THE EFFECTS OF LOW FARES IN SOUTH YORKSHIRE
The Oxford University Transport Studies Unit/South Yorkshire Study Team set out to assess the social and travel changes brought about by public transport policy in South Yorkshire. Quantitative and qualitative data are used, including (a) one-day travel surveys for a sample of 3136 households in 1981 compared with similar surveys conducted in 1972, (b) A postal questionnaire designed to fill in some of the gaps in the surveys, (c) less structured tape recorded interviews with a smaller sample covering a wide range of information on travel attitudes and perceptions and (d) available data on travel patterns elsewhere in the country and on pte operations in the last 7 years. The effect of public transport on other methods of transport such as cars, taxis, railways is discussed, together with the effects on the following particular groups: people in work, shoppers, unemployed people, retired and elderly people and children. Conclusions about bus demand are difficult to draw precisely as there are many complex and interwoven processes operating (e.g. short term elasticities, important life events, and renewal of the population). There is said to be potential for marketing, especially among the young. Suggestions are made for possible future areas of research. (TRRL)
