FINITE ELEMENT FORMULATION BY NESTED INTERPOLATIONS: APPLICATION TO A QUADRILATERAL THIN PLATE BENDING ELEMENT

A simple twelve freedom quadrilateral thin plate bending finite element is obtained by the 'method of nested interpolations'. In this method cubic and linear interpolations are respectively applied to the rotations parallel and normal to each side to transform the twelve global freedoms to sixteen local freedoms and a simple biquadratic Lagrangian interpolation is able to be applied to the latter. This is perhaps the most direct means of forming quadrilateral plate bending elements and applied to standard test problems the present element gives good results. Further demonstrations of the nested interpolation procedure illustrate the wide applications remaining for this method. (Author/TRRL)
