DEVELOPMENT OF CRITERIA FOR LIMITING THE OPENING IN EXPANSION JOINTS USED IN BRIDGE DECKS
A survey directed toward AASHTO bridge engineers revealed that no agency had conducted research relative to automotive and human response factors which dictate limits for safe width of bridge expansion joints. Subsequent literature investigation revealed that somewhat related research has been performed concerning three dimensional dynamics for both automobiles and two wheeled vehicles. Research has also been performed in operator biofeedback indicators and operator physical response mechanisms which may serve as models for further, related research. (FHWA)
