MONO BUOY TAMES A HOSTILE COAST
The world's first offshore loading facility involving a dense mineral substance has been in operation since 1971 and located about 2 miles off the coast of New Zealand's North Island. Vessels load titanomagnetite ironsands in a slurry form via submarine pipeline and an Imodco mono buoy which is held on station by a six chain leg mooring system. The article covers in considerable detail the mooring assembly, base hook-up, vessel handling, suction dredge and stockpiling operations ashore.
