STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF RENOVATED SEWER SYSTEMS. A DISCUSSION DOCUMENT
An initial approach to structural design is described, based on theoretical work, full scale laboratory tests and field trials. Three long term design methods are outlined: (1) for linings that form a bond to the grout and/or the sewer wall, so that the renovated sewer acts as a composite section; (2) for linings that form no such bond; and (3) for very flexible linings, that act as permanent formwork: any structural improvement being provided by the grout. Of the currently available techniques, Gunite, glass reinforced cement (grc) and resin concrete are expected to form part of a composite section. Glass reinforced plastic (grp) may do so too, if its outside surface is treated suitably. Polyethylene and smooth surfaced grp are not expected to bond to the grout. Very flexible thin walled grp has been used to renovate sewers. Renovation of this type is expected to come in the third category, in which any structural improvement is provided by the grout.
