A brief history of motorway lighting is presented. Methods of lighting motorways, motorway lighting maintenance vehicles comparing types with costs, problems associated with working on motorways, costs of coning and signing for lane closures, operational experience including bulk change and fault repair costs, policy for frequency of carrying out repairs, reliability of equipment including lamps, control gear, lanterns and columns etc are considered.
