The symposium "On the Way to 2000" was held in Delft, November 21, 1981, on the occasion of the retirement of Professor Volmuller of the Delft University of Technology, Chairman of the Centre for Transportation Engineering. After an introduction a review is given of the work of Professor Volmuller for traffic engineering. A summary of the discussion and a historical review of the Centre for Traffic Engineering (1971-1983) are added. (TRRL)
