AN IOWA NOISE BARRIER: SOUND LEVELS, AIR QUALITY AND PUBLIC ACCEPTANCE
This report describes the development of Iowa's first Type II (retrofit) noise wall, including background information, pre- and post-barrier construction environmental and attitudinal surveys, and a general assessment of the success of the project. After its first three years the steel wall is judged to be an exceptionally effective traffic noise screen and its appearance is generally acceptable to the affected residents. Air quality monitoring indicates the wall has a minimal effect on transportation-related air pollutant concentrations near the affected homes. This report was prepared for the information of the sponsoring transportation agencies and the City of Des Moines. Further information may be obtained from the Office of Project Planning at the Iowa Department of Transportation. (Author)
