LABORATORY METHODS FOR ESTIMATING THE MOISTURE SUSCEPTIBILITY OF BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS. THE INFLUENCE OF TEST PARAMETERS
LABORATORIEMETODER FOER BEDOEMNING AV BITUMINOESA BELAEGGNINGARS VATTENKAENSLIGHET. INFLYTANDET AV OLIKA FOERSOEKSPARAMETRAR
An experimental study was carried out to "optimize" two selected laboratory methods for estimating the moisture susceptibility of bituminous pavements. "Optimization" implies determination of the effect of a number of test parameters on the results of the analysis. The methods are named "rolling flask method" and "indirect tensile test". The rolling flask method involves mixing evenly graded aggregate with bitumen. The bitumen-coated stones are stored overnight at room temperature and then placed in special glass flasks filled with water. Flasks containing the samples are rolled at room temperature, normally for three days. The degree of coverage is then estimated visually. In the indirect tensile test, Marshall specimens are manufactured. Half the number of test samples are saturated with water and are then stored in water for a given time. The rest of the specimens are stored dry. The specimens are brought to the particular test temperature, normally 10 deg C, and are then subjected to compression according to a predefined procedure, whereupon fracture load can be recorded. The tensile strength of the test sample is calculated from the value for the fracture load. The ratio between the tensile strength of the wet and dry test samples can be regarded as a measure of the resistance of the corresponding pavement to attack by moisture. Nineteen test parameters were investigated in all. (TRRL)
