TRANSPORTATION ENERGY AND THE FUTURE
In the 1980s a number of interesting technologies are under development that can have major impacts on our transportation system. This book describes these technologies and some of their more pertinent characteristics in sufficient detail so that the reader can get some feeling for their implications. It is primarily these technologies, plus perhaps a few more that may surface in the near future, that will form the stable of options from which future choices will be made. Which ones will survive the selection process and which will fade away cannot now be discerned. It is not even clear how the selections will be made. A number of factors constitute the selection process: people's preferences for life styles, the economics associated with each alternative, environmental impacts, and, perhaps most importnat, the energy problem. This book will explore the technologies applicable to transportation in the future. Most especially it will examine those that hold promise (1) to reduce or eliminate the dependence on petroleum, (2) to improve the productivity of the present system by introducing new ways of accomplishing transportation's goals, and (3) to propose the commponents of a new transportation system.
