INVESTIGATION OF THE DEGRADATION OF POLYACRYLAMIDE SOLUTIONS IN PIPING FACILITIES

In the course of an investigation of the regularities in drag reduction of water using commercial-quality polyacrylamide (PAM) a great deal of attention was paid to study of the degradation of PAM solutions. It was established that the PAM solutions under study undergo continuous degradation, losing their effectiveness in the course of liquid motion in the pipe and, particularly, as a result of being moved by a centrifugal pump. This investigation shows that during degradation the molecular weight of PAM and the viscosity of its solution decrease perceptibly, while the power-law index tends to unity, indicating weakening of the non-Newtonian properties of the solution.
