UTILIZATION OF THE KOLMOGOROV SCALE AS A PARAMETER DEFINING DRAG REDUCTION IN THE FLOW OF POLYMERIC SOLUTIONS

Lately, alongside other hypotheses on the mechanism of drag reduction in fluids by means of polymeric additives, a suggestion is put forward that the effectiveness of polymers in turbulent flows is determined by the commensurability of the size of polymer macromolecules (or molecular formations) with the absolute size of turbulent eddies in the flow. This hypothesis can be regarded as proven indirectly by the result of which a stable relationship is established between the drag reduction effect and ratio of Kolmogorov scales. The relationships and recommendations of the resistance to the flow of water in a smooth pipeline upon adding to it commonly known polymers which reduce the drag.
