FATIGUE, SAFETY AND THE TRUCK DRIVER

This book is concerned with the conditions which might give rise to fatigue among truck drivers, and the effects of fatigue on driving safety. Details are given of the social context and physical environment in which the truck driver works, the range of stresses to which typically he might be exposed, and their effects on him in terms of his health, his attitudes to his work and his career. One chapter deals with accidents - the risks truck drivers themselves face, the dangers to other road users of being involved in an accident involving a truck, and the extent to which these accidents can be attributed to fatigue and adverse working conditions. A discussion is presented of the experimental evidence concerning fatigue and driving and the implications that may be drawn from it. Driving from the point of view of the skills involved and their susceptibility to degradation is studied. The physiological reactions of the driver are examined. The few studies that have explored the drivers' experiences of fatigue are discussed. (TRRL)
