REPORT OF THE EFFECT OF TRAFFIC ON SURFACE WATER

TRAFIKENS INVERKAN PAA DAGVATTEN. HUVUDDEL

The concentration of suspended material in surface water depends on traffic density on the road. To some extent, concentration is affected by background levels in different zones. (European zonal classification on the basis of sulphur deposition). Lead content depends on traffic intensity. Background level increases from Zone 1 to 8. Lead content is higher in Zone 5 than in Zone 4 in the same type of area. Zinc content in surface water increases with traffic intensity in Zone 4. Deposition of zinc increases from Zone 1 to 8; this affects concentration in surface water which is higher in Zone 5. Copper content in surface water is much higher if roofs in the area are of copper. Background levels increase from Zone 1 to 8. Cadmium content increases with traffic intensity in Zone 4. Background lelvels rise from Zone 1 to 8. It is not clear whether this affects concentrations in surface water. Other metals which are probably affected by traffic intensity are iron, nickel, manganese and chromium. Hydrocarbon contents in air and deposits are affected by traffic. It is not known how concentrations in surface water are affected. The effect of surface water pollution on receiving watercourses should be investigated. Many of these are used for swimming and fishing. See also TRIS 387209. (TRRL)
