NIGHTTIME VISIBILITY OF NINE TYPES OF PROFILED ROAD MARKINGS ON DRY AND WET ROADS

DE ZICHTBAARHEID 'S NACHTS VAN NEGEN VERTIKAAL GEPROFILEERDE WEGMARKERINGEN OP DROGE EN NATTE WEGDEKKEN

Earlier research has shown that the nighttime visibility of road markings on wet roads can be maintained by using stripes with a vertical profile. This report presents the results of optical measurements on nine types of profiled stripes available in the Netherlands in 1982 and applied on a test section of a motorway. The measurement results are interpreted in terms of visibility distances. For the markings tested visibility during wet conditions appeared to be equal or even somewhat better than during dry conditions. With the exception of two types, the differences between the visibility distances of the markings are negligible on a wet pavement. (Author/TRRL)
