ELECTRIC VEHICLES
The present status of electric vehicle development and the battery technology involved is reviewed, and comments made on the future role of electric vehicles in the Australian transport scene. Means of encouraging the development of electric vehicles in Australia are suggested. Electric vehicles today are in a phase of rapid development. The batteries, control systems, motors and drive systems that together constitute electric vehicles are constantly improving as further effort is put into research, development and testing throughout the world. Electric vehicles appear to offer an avenue that could help reduce Australia's dependence on imported oil and reduce air pollution in central city areas. The paper is not concerned with fixed wire vehicles which draw their power from fixed conductors by means of a moving connection, but with battery powered vehicles which draw power from on-board batteries which are recharged periodically from the supply grid.
