HYDRODYNAMIC FORCES AND MOMENTS ACTING ON TWO DIMENSIONAL ASYMMETRICAL BODIES
This paper deals with the method of calculating hydrodyanmic forces acting on two-dimensional oscillating asymmetrical bodies. By using these hydrodynamic forces, motions in waves of shiptype floating bodies of asymmetrical cross section may be predicted in applying a so-called strip method. This technique is especially useful in forecasting its peculiar motions in winds and waves when a ship is in the heeled condition under strong winds. As the first step, heaving and swaying forces and rolling moments are theoretically computed with two kinds of models in using the method of distributing the singularities on the surface of two-dimensional body. The results of the calculation are confirmed to be very accurate in numerical value and in good agreements with the results obtained by model experiments. It was found through numerical calculations that the rolling moment produced by heaving motion can not be ignored for asymmetrical bodies as originally anticipated.
