OWNERSHIP AND USAGE OF SMALL PASSENGER VEHICLES: FINDINGS FROM THE 1977 NATIONAL PERSONAL TRANSPORTATION STUDY

This report examines current patterns in the ownership and usage of small vehicles by private households. The analysis is conducted to shed additional light on the market potential for smaller, energy efficient vehicles, in particular, electric cars. This study, performed for the Analysis and Assessment Branch, Office of Transportation Programs of the U.S. Department of Energy, is based upon data from the 1977 Nationwide Personal Transportation Survey (NPTS). This survey obtained information on the sociodemographic charactertistics and the travel and vehicle ownership behavior of U.S. households based on a national probability sample. The NPTS data represents perhaps the best information currently available for studying the complex interrelationships between household composition and economic conditions, the number and type of vehicles owned, and how those vehicles are used.
