REMOTE SENSING AND DIGITAL MAPPING. VOLUME 1 - REPORT

The report presents the findings of the committee following an investigation into the development of remote sensing and digital mapping techniques. As currently used remote sensing is generally the determination of the nature of objects or surfaces from a distance above the earth while digital mapping involves the conversion of geographically distributed data into digital form, storage and subsequent processing and display in various forms. The development of both techniques, individually and in combination, are discussed in the following sections: (1) introduction; (2) growth and applications of remote sensing and digital mapping; (3) institutional organisation; (4) views of witnesses; (5) opinion of the committee; and, (6) summary of conclusions and recommendations.
