The theory of traffic lighting from the point of view of traffic engineering is highlighted. After an introduction, traffic safety and comfort, functional requirements, visual requirements and cost benefit considerations are discussed. Traffic lighting in special cases such as the lighting of tunnels, pedestrian crossings, junctions and the classification of roads are mentioned. Relevant constructional aspects of road pavements, carriageway marking, signalization, traffic signs, traffic signals are also included. The report is a reprint of a lecture on traffic lighting given at the Delft University of Technology for the study in traffic engineering. (TRRL)
