LIGHTING FOR ROAD TRAFFIC
VERLICHTING VOOR WEGVERKEER
From the multitude of moving details in the central part of the field of vision of the driver as well as in the peripheral part the driver must select those details which give him the required information. His experience as a driver and the automatic nature of his steering process can improve the exactness of this selection so that a large part of his total attention remains available for visual perception and the interpretation of it. The degree to which relevant details are conspicuous and well recognizable or in other words, how easily the selection of the details which can give the wanted information takes place and how reliable the information obtained from perception is, depends on the quality of the lighting. Therefore traffic lighting is a necessity for traffic. It is not correct to consider traffic lighting as a traffic safety measure alone. (TRRL)
