PSYCHOLOGICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE FUNCTIONING OF CHILDREN IN TRAFFIC

This report forms the final report of part of a larger project on traffic education for young children. The part described here concerns the capacities of young children with regard to the pedestrian task. A number of studies are described that resulted from the conclusions of a thorough study of the literature. A description of the various experiments and comparisons with the literature is given. The relationships between the capacities in traffic, as shown in the experiments, and the various background variables are described. An account of a number of practical problems and considerations related to experimental research with young children, control of the test situation, and the complexity of carrying out experiments which require passing at specific moments are provided. A number of conclusions and implications for traffic training of children are given. The main conclusion is that the capacities of young children with regard to the pedestrian task are better than expected on a theoretical basis. (TRRL)
