Safety of public spaces is an important requirement in order that the best use shall be made of the environment. In particular, it is important for children, because they are the most frequent users of these spaces when they are playing outside. In our society there are very few places for the playing child who wants to discover his environment. The responsibility is of course mainly that of the parents but often they overestimate the mobility of their children. School-play-yards could be kept open longer, even after schooltime, to provide an extra play-ground for the children. Local authorities should be stimulated to have a policy to improve the position of the slow traffic, especially the pedestrians. More facilities such as footpaths, kerbs and cycle tracks on both sides of the street are recommended. (TRRL)
