Deformation Response of Metro Tunnels to Adjacent Tram Track Construction

With the development of the modern urban rail transit technology, more and more tram lines are planned to be constructed in cities of China. The construction of tram tracks will not only affect the existing urban road on the ground or buildings nearby but also the underground structures, e.g. metro tunnels. In view of the importance of the problem, the influence of a tram track construction on the deformation characteristics of existing metro tunnels is investigated based on the construction project of a tram line in Nanjing City. In this paper the construction process of the tram track over the metro tunnels is simulated by finite element (FE) method. The displacement and deformation of the metro tunnel are calculated in order to evaluate the influence of the tram track construction on the safety of the metro train. Results show that the effect of the tram track construction on the deformation of nearby tunnels is obvious according to the original design of the tram track. Consequently, two alternatives of the optimization based on the original design of the tram track are suggested. The calculation method introduced in this paper can be improved to evaluate the uneven settlement of transition zones between tram tracks on the ground and structures.
