FROST IN THE ROAD

VORST IN DE WEG

A detailed description of climatological aspects of Norway, in particular the frost index, is given. Thermal properties of soils and insulation materials, applied to reduce frost penetration, are described. A calculation method for frost penetration is outlined. Frost heave and lack of stability due to thawing, and its effects on soils and pavements, is discussed. Frost protection by means of stone layers, tree bark layers and insulation slabs (constructed with either polystyrene, glass foam or expanded clay) are described. Specifications for these materials are given. Polyurethane-, styropor-concrete-and tar-pitch foam insulation layers, as used in Western Germany, are reviewed. (TRRL)
