DISTRIBUTOR ROADS WITHIN RESIDENTIAL AREAS. A SYSTEM FOR SELECTION OF TRAFFIC ENGINEERING MEASURES

ONTSLUITINGSWEGEN IN VERBLIJFSGEBIEDEN - EEN ZOEKSYSTEEM VOOR VERKEERSTECHNISCHE MAATREGELEN

At the Study Centre for Traffic Engineering a Working Party on the Design of Access Roads within Residential Areas was set up in 1979. It had the task of formulating a series of recommendations for the (re)design of distributor roads within residential areas. The term residential or socialising' area is taken to include shops, post offices etc. More specifically it is an area where the social function determines a right of way for pedestrians and cyclists. Chapter 2 discusses how to define a residential area and those aspects of slow traffic which are relevant. Chapter 3 discusses which aspects of road and motor traffic are relevant. Chapter 4 presents a method of selecting measures to deal with the potential conflicts between slow traffic on one side and motor traffic on the other. In Chapter 5 some of these measures are presented. (TRRL)
