ANALYSIS OF THE LIMIT EQUILIBRIUM OF ANISOTROPIC SOFT CLAYS WITH STRENGTH VARYING ACCORDING TO DEPTH

ANALISIS DEL EQUILIBRIO LIMITE DE ARCILLAS BLANDAS ANISOTROPAS Y CON RESISTENCIA VARIABLE CON LA PROFUNDIDAD

A soft soil in failure due to rapid loading is analysed. It is mainly based on ballester's model of soil behaviour, expressed in terms of total stresses, where the anisotropy and strength gradient with depth caused by the stress history are taken into account. The calculation method used is the one with characteristic lines, the discontinuity lines of the stress field, the boundary conditions, and the extension of the stress field to the rigid half-space being specially studied. After checking the validity of the results obtained, six real cases of actual embankments that failed are solved with the model developed. A system for estimating the strength in the upper dried crust is set up; it makes it possible to eliminate one of the main sources of error in the calculations based on conventional tests. Finally a dimensionless study of the problem is made, developing a series of charts that would, in any case, make it possible to eliminate the distribution of loads in failure transmitted by the embankment fill from a reduced number of mechanical properties of the foundation soil.
