Law and Corresponding Relationship between TFOT and PAV of Asphalt
The pressure aging vessel (PAV) is an aging procedure proposed by the Strategic Highway Research Project (SHRP) to simulate long-term field oxidative aging of asphalt. While the thin film oven test (TFOT) is used to simulate short-term thermal aging, which is referred to the aging of mixing process. The objective of this study is to find the law and corresponding relationship between TFOT and PAV. A laboratory study was conducted to evaluate the performance of three representative kinds of matrix asphalt through TFOT and PAV tests by viscosity, penetration, softening point, and ductility. Test results showed that the increased aging time led to viscosity increase, penetration decrease, and softening point increase in both TFOT and PAV tests. The viscosity test results indicated that the viscosity-temperature property of asphalt after TFOT (5 h)+PAV (20 h) was very close to that of TFOT (15 h) for different kinds of asphalt, but tests of TFOT and PAV did not change the temperature sensitivity of asphalt. Penetration and softening point test results showed that as for one kind of asphalt, penetration and softening point of asphalt after TFOT (5 h)+PAV (20 h) were corresponding to that of the almost same specific time of TFOT, but different kinds of asphalt had different corresponding time. The findings would enhance the cognition of laboratory simulation aging of asphalt.
