VARIATIONAL ANALYSIS OF THE FLOW DEVELOPMENT IN THE ENTRANCE REGION OF CIRCULAR TUBES AND PARALLEL-PLATE CHANNELS
Variational principles are obtained for the flow development in the entrance region of circular tubes and parallel-plate channels. Since the system is nonconservative, the variational formulations are not of the Hamiltonian type. They are constructed based upon the use of convolutions. By means of the Rayleigh-Ritz procedure specific approximate solutions are found, resulting in relatively simple calculations. Both velocity and pressure drop computations show excellent agreement with the exact solution of the linearized problem.
