Consumer Demand for Partial Driving Automation and Hands-Free Driving Capability
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducted a survey, September 2021-October 2021, of 1,010 U.S. drivers to examine consumer attitudes around: partial driving automation (including lane centering assistance and auto lane change), driver monitoring, and the appeal of self-driving vehicles. Survey results indicated that 80% of the respondents are interested in using lane centering but prefer a hands-on-wheel requirement (36%) over hands-free (27%). For auto lane change, 73% of respondents would use it but prefer that it be driver-initiated (45%) rather than vehicle-initiated (14%). In addition over 75% of respondents prefer a hands-on-wheel requirement for auto lane change. The report also discusses the reasons behind preferences for hands-on-wheel or hands-free driving automation.
