HEAT TRANSFER TO RIVER ICE COVERS
The importance of the convective transfer of heat to the underside of river ice covers is examined, and the results related to customary means of predicting the rate of thickening of the ice cover. It is shown that even small above-freezing water temperatures (a few hundredths degrees C) have significant effects on the growth rate when associated with typical river flow velocities. The results are applicable both to natural rivers and rivers having an imposed heat influx.
