TECHNICAL GUIDE FOR EQUIPMENT TO DETECT HIGH AND OVERHEIGHT VEHICLES AT LOW BRIDGES

This document describes a system designed to detect vehicles and loads that are too high to pass safely under a bridge and to give visual warning to the driver. In addition, for use with arch bridges, a dual height detection system is described which will direct high vehicles which would strike the side of the bridge arch to adopt a centre of the road approach and will simultaneously warn oncoming traffic of this manoeuvre. The height gauge consists of two infra-red beams, 500mm apart, arranged so that the beams are parallel to the road surface and are set at a height determined by the user. The requirements and the installation of the height gauge, secret warning/diversion sign, and the changes required to provide a dual height system are set out. (TRRL)
