PHILOSOPHY OF TRAFFIC SAFETY RESEARCH
FILOSOFIE VAN HET VERKEERSVEILIGHEIDSONDERZOEK
In the working field of traffic safety research the author sets out to provide a matrix structure from the following points of view: (1) policy sectors which influence traffic safety and (2) questions of research which are important for policy supporting research. The subdivision into policy sectors can be continued in a large number of such sectors, corresponding with policy instruments, points of impacts for the control of traffic and categories of measures. For the subdivision of the research area in such a way that it is also clear for outsiders, other points of view can be chosen. The place of traffic safety research in society, traffic safety research related to the philosophy, traffic safety research considered from the point of view of the systems theory, and the consideration of traffic safety research as a collection of research activities are discussed. A division is made between pre-crash, and post-crash measures. (TRRL)
