ELECTRIC DRIVE: SOLUTION TO CUBIC LIMITED SHIPS
A discussion of electric-drive propulsion systems is presented. Advantages of this type of propulsion system, among them the capability of unmanned operation, the establishment of a very short engine room thereby increasing the cargo-carrying capcity of the ship, and the inherent system flexibility, are all discussed. The various types of systems, from straight D.C. to the A.C.-rectified-to-D.C., and their features are also described. The controllability of this system, as well as a brief equipment review, are also presented in the article.
