A SUMMARY OF CONTROLLABLE PITCH PROPELLER SYSTEMS EMPLOYED BY THE U.S. NAVY
The principle objective of this paper is to describe the hydraulically actuated controllable pitch propeller systems actively employed by the U.S. Navy. Advantages of controllable pitch propellers, including the ability to reverse ships' way without changing the direction of shaft rotation, improved ship maneuverability and increased fuel economy while cruising under reduced load conditions, are all discussed. The discussion of the systems themselves is limited to the hydraulically actuated systems primarily because it is felt that this is the only design suitable for high horsepower applications. The system descriptions are of necessity brief. Their intent is to give a general understanding of the configuration and the method of operation of each system.
