Adapting the Propensity for Angry Driving Scale for Application in China
Driving while angry, is also known as “road rage,” the prevalent term describing aggressive behaviors on the road. The paper’s purpose is to translate and revise the propensity for driving angry scale (PADS), to test its reliability and validity among Chinese drivers, to determine whether the PADS can be used appropriately as a tool in Chinese “road rage” research, and to analyze and investigate a preliminary application of Chinese-PADS. The paper presents 19 items, selection of responses, and item scoring. Three experienced drivers assessed this questionnaire first, and adjustments were made according to their advice. Sixty volunteers with different occupations participated in this research. Results revealed that the Chinese-PADS realized an acceptable Cronbach’s alpha level of 0.904. Some specific items are presented to illustrate gender differences in road rage. The Chinese-PADS provides an effective approach to predict the propensity of driving anger.
