Interactive Effect of Circadian Rhythm and Time on Task on Driver Fatigue Level
Driver fatigue is a major cause of traffic accidents, especially accidents involving death and serious injuries. However, in the current fatigue management legislation in China, only the maximum consecutive driving hours is mentioned; the impact of circadian rhythm is not considered. The purpose of this study is to investigate the fatigue level variance under the impact of circadian rhythm and time on task. The corresponding time-based fatigue management countermeasure is also proposed. Driving behavior measurement was collected by field experiments. The observed-reported Karolinska sleepiness scale of drivers was recorded every 5 minutes by one observer for all the groups in the experiments. In conclusion, for the same time on task, if the drivers start their driving at different time on day, their fatigue increasing rate was different. The findings of this study are a good reference for recommending updated legislation that acknowledges the effect of circadian rhythms.
