Simulation-Based Method for Seat Inventory Control Optimization under Heterogeneous Customer Behavior: A Case Study of the China Railway
Railway seat inventory control aims at maximizing profit in the ticket booking process. This paper focuses on optimizing the nested-pattern booking limit control policy processed by the China Railway Company with consideration of heterogeneous customer behaviors. The mechanism of this control policy is illustrated in a compact and structurized model. The heterogeneity of customer behavior is taken in to account by dividing the full market into segments, within which the customer behaviors are modeled independently, including choosing, waiting, and quitting. The seat inventory problem is expressed by a formalized model. Due to the complexity of the ticket booking process, a simulation-based heuristic approach is proposed to improve the policy iteratively. The authors conduct a single-train case and a 10-train case to test the efficiency of this method. Finally, the authors run a Nanning-Guangzhou High-Speed Railway line case with practical data.
