Identifying Hazardous Roadways and Analyzing Severity of Motorcycle Crashes in the Municipality of Anchorage, Alaska

During the period between 2000 and 2012, the Municipality of Anchorage (MOA) experienced 960 motorcycle crashes out of the 1,987 crashes, with 36 fatal, and 479 incapacitating injuries. A steady increase of crashes followed by a drop-in rate, while the crash rate reached at around 90 crashes per year. Crash history suggested an increase of crashes during summer season. Top ten roadways were selected based on frequency and severity of crashes. Angle type crashes were the common types observed and also identified as vulnerable for injury crashes by binary logistic regression. Young male motorcyclists with an age ranging of 20–30 were considered more prone to engage in a motorcycle crash but did not find as effective in logistic regression. Careless driving was the most crucial cause of the injury crashes in Anchorage. A curve with a level roadway and with no traffic measures found influential to injury motorcycle crashes.
