Addressing America's Traffic Safety Crisis: Examining the Causes of Increasing U.S. Traffic Fatalities and Identifying Solutions to Improve Road User Safety

This report analyzes U.S. Department of Transportation, AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data to examine rising U.S. fatality rates from 2019-2021 and possible causes for the increase. The report concludes that increasing traffic fatalities appear to be the result of increased risk taking, including speeding, impaired driving and reduced safety belt use. A comprehensive approach to reducing traffic fatalities is discussed including the Safe System Approach and funding highway safety improvements.
