ANALYSIS FOR CRACKS IN SHIP STRUCTURE USING THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD WITH THE CONCEPT OF CRACK SUB-STRUCTURE
Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) is very valuable for practical estimation of fracture phenomena. It is based on the theory of elasticity, and makes clear the behavior of cracked structures in which the plastic zone size at the crack tip is much smaller than the crack length. LEFM can be used in analyzing brittle fracture, propagation of fatigue crack, and so on. Crack analysis requires calculation of the stress intensity factor (SIF or K-value) for the cracks of arbitrary-shaped structures under various boundary conditions. There are several numerical methods such as the finite element method, the collocation method, the mapping method, and so on. Of these methods, the finite element method with the aid of analytical solutions developed by Dr. Yoshiyuki Yamamoto is to be considered optimum in applicability and accuracy. This paper discusses Yamamoto's method modified by introducing the concept of "Crack Sub-Structure', and a computer code developed for two-dimensional elastic in-plane problems. With the aid of this code, cracked members of ship structures, etc. can be easily analyzed. The computer code was first used in solving basic problems to ascertain its accuracy, and then in analyzing the slot model of ship structures as an example. From the results of these calculations, it can be seen clearly that the modified method is quite useful for crack analysis of complicated structures.
