STRESS DISTRIBUTION ALONG HATCH CORNER ON CONTAINER SHIP
Torsional strength of a container ship with large hatch openings and narrow decks have become a problem of great importance and much research has been carried out both in theories and experiments. As an extension of this research, the authors investigated by finite element method the stress distributions along a hatch corner on the upper deck where high stress arises due to the bending and twisting of ship's hull. Their results are reported in this paper. Stress concentration around the upper deck opening is generally analyzed as a plane problem. However, the stress distributions at the hatch corner of a container ship are greatly affected by the vertical transverse members, such as hatch end beams and coamings and stress evaluation must be made as a three dimensional structure to obtain accurate values. In this report, after simple plane calculation, stress distribution was investigated along the hatch corner of upper deck by simplified three dimensional analysis in introducing vertical members as trusses. A guide to ship design was obtained as the results of investigations of the influences of the vertical members with variable depth on hatch corner stresses and of the estimation of the effects of local increase in the thicknesses of vertical transverse members and upper deck plates. These analytical results by finite element method are compared with some measurements made on actual container ships and both are found to agree well.
