TRANSVERSE STRENGTH ANALYSIS SYSTEM OF OIL TANKER

With an unexpectedly rapid increase in the size of oil tankers of late to VLCC and ULCC, accurate and speedy strength analysis of the hull structures has becomes more necessary. The authors have thus developed the following independent calculation programs for improvement in the design of tankers. 1. Scantling calculation program for construction materials required by ship classification society's Rules. 2. Transverse strength analysis program by three dimensional framed structure. 3. Finite element program with automatic mesh generation (plane stress analysis). In designing the construction of mammoth tankers, detail analysis of the strength of transverse primary members is necessary but many man-hours are required to prepare the input data and arrange the output data when each above-mentioned program is to be used separately. It is almost impossible to investigate many forms of the structures. Therefore, the authors have developed a consistent construction system in combining those programs to obtain accurately the detail results of stress analysis for many structural arrangements in a short time. Detail and accurate analysis of transverse members by FEM in particular can be obtained only in one day and the results of stress distribution can be plotted out in color distinction according to stress levels.
