GATE OF NO. 3 DOCK AT CHIBA WORKS

The No. 3 dock at Mitsui Chiba Works was integrally completed in August 1973 and the first ship in the dock is now under construction. The dock is not intended for use of the entire process of a ship construction but it is planned to get the most effective result of the shipyard as a whole by using it systematically in conjunction with the existing No. 1 dock (consisting of an auxiliary dock and a 150,000 dwt repair dock) and the 500,000 dwt No. 2 dock. In other words, the dock will be utilized specially in the construction of the mid-bodies of VLCC and ULCC as well as ore/oil carriers ranging in size of from 200,000 to 500,000 dwt. To serve most fitly for the above-mentioned purposes, a double tier dock gate is designed and built with special mechanism. Though it is of particular nature unprecedented in the world of shipbuilding industry, it has brought a very satisfactory result, in respect to easiness of construction, lightening of weight, simplicity of assembly, strength of structure, water tightness of dock gate, easiness of operation and stability of manoeuvring, as initially anticipated. Outline of its design, purpose and test results are explained in this report.
