SOSHANGUVE UNIT "CC": APPLICATION OF RATIONAL NORMS FOR TOWNSHIP SERVICES

This report describes the application of rational norms to an urban residential development of some 1500 dwelling units. A road heirarchy which precludes through traffic is developed, through a layout consisting of a series of closed systems contributing to the quality of the environment and a reduction of the impact of vehicular traffic. The design concept is intended to achieve the goals of safety, economy, efficiency and convenience for all the inhabitants of the environment, and also to conserve land resources and check the sprawl of urban development. The report contains a detailed account of the design process, principles and standards, and compares a traditional layout with the more economical alternatives. (TRRL)
