Road Safety Monitor 2021: Distracted Driving Attitudes and Practices, 2004-2021
This fact sheet summarizes results related to the topic of distracted driving from the 2021 Road Safety Monitor (RSM), an annual public opinion poll of Canadians. 1,500 Canadian drivers were asked about concern related to cell phone use while driving, concern about texting while driving, how often they used their cell phones while driving, and perceived danger of talking or texting while driving. Based on 2021 survey data, 42.9% of respondents agreed the use of cell phones while driving should be banned; 31.7% reported they often talked on their hands-free phone while driving; and 13.1% reported that they often texted while driving. Logistic regression modeling was used to estimate the number of distracted drivers by sex and age.
