A TRAINING PROGRAM FOR OBSERVERS OF KINDERGARTEN CHILDREN IN TRAFFIC

EEN TRAINING VOOR OBSERVATOREN VAN KLEUTERS IN HET VERKEER

A training program has been developed for six observers who had to follow and score behaviour of kindergarten children when crossing roads on their way to and from school or while at play. The objectives of the observations were (a) to analyse child road crossing behaviour in great detail and (b) to evaluate the effect of a training programme, involving road crossings between and at intersections and near parked cars. For the first objective it was desirable to score behaviour at various stages of crossing the road: approach, kerb, parking areas, line of vision and road. Some 20 variables had to be scored verbally using a portable tape recorder. Three video films each containing some 30 crossings at various sites were produced. One for training the observers on a step-by-step basis to score finally on all items. A second one for use on new material and a third one for a final test on proficiency. Including some exercises on the street the training took 12 days full time. During the actual pre- and post-observations (6 weeks each) agreement between observers was checked regularly. Although relatively many variables were scored, inter-observer agreement appeared to be very satisfactory. (TRRL)
