REFLECTION PROPERTIES OF ROAD MARKINGS IN HEADLIGHT ILLUMINATION, DEPENDENCE ON MEASURING GEOMETRY

The specific luminance of road markings in headlight illumination is studied by means of measurements and with the use of models. For road markings without glass beads the dependence on geometry is shown to be the same as for road surfaces. For road markings with glass beads the variations are of the same nature, but with larger individual variations. On this basis the choice of a standard measuring geometry common to road surfaces and road markings is discussed. It is proposed that in both cases the estimation of the specific luminance for other geometries is done by means of the expressions derived for road surfaces. The investigation is carried out by the National Swedish Road and Traffic Research Institute (VTI). the Danish Illuminating Engineering Laboratory (LTL) and the Danish Road Laboratory within the Nordic Research Cooperation for Night Traffic.
