Market Analysis of Two- And Three-Wheeler Vehicles in Key ASEAN Member States
The authors assess the 2019-2020 two- and three-wheeler (2&3W) vehicles market in Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries. The authors analyze in particular the 2&3W markets in four ASEAN countries (Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam) with data organized by vehicle characteristics, brand, and best-selling models. The 2&3W sales in these countries comprised 91.4% of total 2&3W sales in all ASEAN countries. The authors also analyze the adoption of electric two-wheelers (E2Ws) and electric three-wheelers (E3Ws), the characteristics of E2W and E3W vehicle fleets, market share by brand, and best-selling models in the four countries. The authors’ profile of the 2&3W market in the ASEAN countries could support future policies to lessen the negative impacts of 2&3Ws and to promote sustainable transportation. Such policies could incentivize production of electric 2&3W vehicles in order to promote their uptake and to limit the number of gasoline-powered 2&3Ws. The authors’ findings can also illuminate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on 2&3W markets in the AEAN region.
